![]() If you could live with a dull hum in your home, why should a similar sound chase off a wild animal just because it is “ultrasonic?” The reality is these sounds–if they are even being emitted–aren’t loud enough or accompanied by anything threatening, so again, the raccoon will just ignore them. Using the concept that animals can hear higher frequencies than humans can, these products promise the ultrasonic frequency will continuously hum and drive a raccoon crazy, forcing it to leave or preventing it from staying in a location. Ultrasonic machines: Ultrasonic machines take the sound repellent plan one step further. ![]() The reality is the loud noise may scare the raccoon initially, but once the animal learns there is a predictable pattern with no accompanying danger, it will ignore the sound. The theory is that the occasional noise will prevent a raccoon from creating a permanent living space. Sound repellents typically blast a loud noise at timed intervals, spooking any animals in the area. Sound machines: It’s true, no living creature wants to be around loud noise all the time, but this is not how sound repellents work. To understand why raccoon repellents don’t work, consider the following: The only real way to handle nuisance raccoons is to trap and remove them while fixing any issues around the home that drew the animals there in the first place. Buying any products for this purpose is just a waste of time and money, and will likely result in more frustration if raccoons are being a problem around a property. In reality, there are no true raccoon repellents. Gasoline and lemon juice are also commonly cited for do-it-yourselfers who want to save a little cash and be more environmentally friendly doing it. Homeowners looking for information on the Internet encounter dozens of articles encouraging the use of essential oils–particularly peppermint oil–as effective repellents. There are also a number of do-it-yourself home remedies which tend to focus on using smell as a means of keeping wild animals away.

To derive level 1 evidence for DRF treatment, we conducted the Wrist and Radius Injury Surgical Trial (WRIST). In this era of value-based care and shared decision-making, long-term outcomes help to guide surgeons, patients, and their families through understanding the benefits and risks of each treatment. 8 - 16 Long-term outcomes on injuries in older adults are especially germane because today’s older generation is living longer and leading more active lives than previous generations. Few studies followed older adults longer than 12 months, and those that did only reported results from the final assessment intermediate outcomes to track the trajectory of recovery were missing. Literature is sparse regarding long-term, posttreatment DRF outcomes in older populations. This is particularly true for older adults, who resist being randomized and may experience barriers to follow-up such as lack of transportation. 3 The lack of evidence for comparative efficacy stems from the difficulty in conducting clinical trials when the treatment options are so disparate that recruiting a sufficient sample size can be difficult. 1 Despite more than 200 years of experience in treating this injury since it was first described by Colles 2 in 1812, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons guidelines published in 2009 indicated that there is insufficient evidence to justify any particular DRF treatment over another for older adults. More than 85 000 Medicare beneficiaries sustain distal radius fracture (DRF) annually. Trial Registration Identifier: NCT01589692 Patient needs and recovery goals that fit to relative risks and benefits of each treatment type will be more valuable in treatment decision-making. These findings suggest that long-term outcomes need not necessarily be considered in deciding between treatment options. The rate of malunion was higher in the casting group (26 participants ) than in the other groups (4 participants for VLPS, 8 participants for EFP, and 4 participants for CRPP χ 2 3 = 43.6 P < .001), but malunion was not associated with the 24-month outcome difference across groups.Ĭonclusions and Relevance The study did not find clinically meaningful patient-reported outcome differences 24 months after injury across treatment groups, with little change between 12 and 24 months. ![]() Pain scores also did not differ across groups at 24 months (χ 2 3 = 2.64 P = .45). Mean MHQ summary scores at 24 months were 88 (95% CI, 83-92) for VLPS, 83 (95% CI, 78-88) for EFP, 85 (95% CI, 79-90) for CRPP, and 85 (95% CI, 79-90) for casting, with no clinically meaningful difference across groups after adjusting for covariates (χ 2 3 = 1.44 P = .70). Assessments were completed at 24 months for 182 participants (160 women mean age, 70.1 years). Results A total of 304 adults were recruited for the study, and 187 were randomized to undergo surgery, 65 to VLPS, 64 to EFP, and 58 to CRPP 117 participants opted for closed reduction and casting. Secondary outcomes were scores on the MHQ subdomains hand strength and wrist motion. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcome was the 24-month Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire (MHQ) summary score. The remaining participants chose closed reduction and casting. Interventions Participants were randomized to open reduction and volar locking plate system (VLPS), external fixation with or without supplementary pinning (EFP), and percutaneous pinning (CRPP). Data analysis was performed from March 2019 to March 2021. Participants were adults aged 60 years or older with isolated, unstable DRFs at 24 health systems in the US, Canada, and Singapore. Objective To compare outcomes across treatment groups at 24 months among adults with DRFs who participated in the WRIST trial.ĭesign, Setting, and Participants The Wrist and Radius Injury Surgical Trial (WRIST) randomized, international, multicenter trial was conducted from April 1, 2012, through December 31, 2016. Current evidence regarding long-term outcomes in older adults is scarce. Importance Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are common injuries among older adults and can result in substantial disability.

The idea is this article will act as an evolving resource. Oh, and help us out! If you've noticed a PS4 game that blocks Share Play, let us know in the comments below. One thing to note, our testing was done using fully updated PS4s in the UK, and the results are accurate at the time of publication. "Share Play is a system level feature enabled by System Software Update 2.0 making it available for all PS4 titles, however the option is available to developers to disable the feature according to what they feel will best benefit the consumer experience." Whatever the case, it's obvious publishers can disable Share Play despite it being a system feature that works with games by default. Or perhaps they feel the resolution and frame-rate hit does their games a disservice. Or perhaps some publishers have asked for Share Play to be blocked until their games have been out for a while. Share Play only arrived a couple of weeks ago, as part of the firmware update 2.0, so perhaps there are growing pains on the tech side (Shadow of Mordor, for example, blocked Share Play pre-firmware update 2.01 but now works). (We've seen reports that Minecraft Share Play works after its initial scene, but during our tests it failed to work at any point.) We were told the developers were waiting for Sony to explain what's up, and that, hopefully, it will be fixable via a patch. Developer 4J Studios seemed nonplussed when we asked about it. Here's a strange one: Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition is blocked. As you'd expect, all the Sony-developed games we tested worked. The publisher is looking into it for us.Ĭonversely, all EA games we tested worked fine. But Sleeping Dogs, Murdered Soul Suspect and Lords of the Fallen all work fine. We've asked Ubisoft for comment.Ī couple of Square Enix games are blocked: Thief and Tomb Raider. ![]() Overnight Activision released a statement on the matter, claiming their engineers didn't have time to test Share Play and so disabled it.Įlsewhere, Ubisoft download games Rayman Legends and Child of Light are blocked despite full price games Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag and Watch Dogs working without issue. In any case, Activision's own Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark works fine, too. But then developer Bungie owns the Destiny IP, so perhaps it put its foot down. This seems strange when Destiny, also published by Activision, does work. The majority of games work, but some, like Call of Duty: Ghosts and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, do not. If it doesn't, we say which message you get. We've grouped the games we tested by publisher. "Viewing the game screen that the host is currently playing is not allowed due to content restrictions in your country or region. There are two different messages that explain why a game is being blocked. We wanted to find out whether that was a one off or whether blocking was widespread, so we tested as many games as we could get our hands on. Yesterday it emerged that Sledgehammer's first-person shooter Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare blocks PS4 Share Play. But, nearly two weeks into its life, it does not. Sony has said it wants Share Play to work with all PS4 games. But with Share Play two people can play against each other from the comfort of their homes. The wonderful Towerfall Ascension, for example, does not feature online multiplayer. And in some cases it lets you do play in a way the game proper does not. Share Play works through streaming, so resolution and frame-rate aren't at their best. As long as both players are PlayStation Plus subscribers, it should work. It's designed to let the player who owns the game, aka the host, virtually pass their controller to an online friend who doesn't own the game. Share Play is one of the PlayStation 4's most eye-catching features. ![]() Laurel Grove will give you a small town feeling and that Florida beach vacation mood all in one! Because of this, the center of mass has been shifted closer to the chest, while the hips still stayed in the back. In the process for optimization for flight birds have lost their long tails. Let’s simplify the body now, using both bones and muscles for this: The body of a bird is simple and bulky, with hips fused with the chest, so you can imagine the whole main body as one element. You just need to understand that under all these feather there is a normal animal with a torso, long neck, thick thigh and calf, and a specialized arm. So we don’t really need to memorize their detailed look. That theropod skeleton is covered with muscles… which we never see. ![]() What we see as a beak is only a part of normal dinosaur jaws. So if you only trace its evolution to a bird, you’ll find all these structures in the latter easily.Īnatomy of birds is well hidden under feathers, but once you think of them as dinosaurs, you should be able to imagine it without problems. Dinosaurs like A, on the other hand, are easier to grasp-they have legs, feet, arms, and hands. But birds are so uniquely built that it may be hard to “become” them. Why am I showing you this? When we draw animals from imagination, we often compare their bodies to ours to “feel” their movement and to create a proper, realistic pose. And C, finally, is a skeleton of a modern bird (chicken, to be exact), with its anatomy even more specialized for flying. B belongs to archaeopteryx-another theropod, this time with real wings and the anatomy optimized for flight. Skeleton A belongs to a very dinosaurs-looking member of theropods (most of them were at least partially feathered!). It can be hard to believe, but not all dinosaurs became extinct. Why? Because they’re dinosaurs! Simple Bird Anatomy Birds are fascinating, completely unique creatures, and they require a slightly different approach in drawing than the animals we have tackled before. But wings are not a separate entity-they’re attached to some animal, and today we’re going to learn about such animal. Last time we took a close look at wings, their anatomy, and details.
